6 Ways to Fix Sticky Notes App Not Working on Windows 10

Sticky Notes is a built-in note-taking application that allows Windows users to jot down their daily planner or take notes while working on a project. Despite regular updates from Microsoft, you may still encounter problems while using it.

Some common issues include the app taking forever to load, showing errors like error code 0x803f8001, or simply not allowing users to type anything in notes. If you encounter any of these issues, we’ll discuss the fixes to get your app working in no time.

Back up your sticky notes

Before you do anything, you need to back up your notes. Backing up application data is essential before implementing a patch. So if something goes wrong, you can reinstall the app, restore the backup, and pick up where you left off.

Sticky Notes backup varies depending on the version of Windows you are using. To backup Sticky Notes in Windows 10 Anniversary Update version 1607 or later, follow the steps below:

  1. Navigate to the following location in File Explorer:
  2. Make a copy of plum.sqlite file and keep it in a safe place.

That’s all. This copy of the file contains all of the Sticky Notes data. All you have to do is copy the same file back to the original location to restore a backup.

To back up versions of Sticky Notes for Windows earlier than version 1607 of the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, follow these steps:

  1. Hurry Win + R to open the To run ordered.
  2. Type “%AppData%” and click OKAY.
  3. Move towards Microsoft > Sticky Notes.
  4. Copy it StickyNotes.snt file and save it to backup.

As in the previous case, you just need to copy the same file to the exact location to restore the backup. After backing up the app data, you can implement the following fixes.

1. Check your internet connection

Before you start troubleshooting, make sure your internet connection is working. Although the Sticky Notes app can work offline, it may take longer for your notes to load. Therefore, give the app more time to load properly.

You may encounter a synchronization error displayed in the upper right corner of the window without an internet connection. Because of this, you won’t be able to access synced notes or sync new ones unless you restore your connection.

You should make sure your internet connection is working and resolve any issues you are having before further fixes. Once you rule out this possibility, move on to the next fix.

2. Disable all other note-taking apps running in parallel

To avoid conflicts between them, it’s best to temporarily disable any other note-taking apps you’re running alongside Sticky Notes.

If you don’t have any other apps open or if closing running apps doesn’t make any difference, it’s time for some major repairs. Don’t forget to back up your Sticky Notes data before doing this.

3. Update and Repair Sticky Notes

You will likely encounter issues with the app if you haven’t updated it for a while. To rule out this possibility, visit the Microsoft Store, search for the Sticky Notes app, and click the Update button if available.

Next, you need to repair the Sticky Notes app to make sure the issues don’t arise due to corrupt or damaged files. Here’s how:

  1. Right click on Windows Begin button and go to Settings.
  2. Move towards apps.
  3. To research Sticky Notes in the search bar.
  4. Select the app and click Advanced options.
  5. Click on the Repair.

If this option isn’t available to you, or if repairing the app doesn’t fix the problem, continue to the next step.

4. Eliminate the Possibility of Corrupt Files or Sticky Notes

Resetting the app will rule out the possibility of a corrupt Sticky Notes file or notes that weren’t fixed during the update or repair. If that doesn’t work, you can also reinstall the app.

Before performing any of these operations, keep a backup of the app files, as resetting or reinstalling will delete all your data. If you haven’t backed up the files yet, do so before continuing.

To reset the Sticky Notes app, follow the steps below:

  1. Go to Settings > Apps and search for “Sticky Notes” in the search bar.
  2. Move towards Advanced options.
  3. Click it Reset button.

Reset didn’t work? Uninstall the app and all its associated files.

To uninstall the app, go to Settings > Appsselect Sticky Notes in the list of installed apps, then click Uninstall. After uninstallation, go to Microsoft Storefind Sticky Notes, then click Obtain.

When you reinstall the app, copy the backup file you copied earlier and paste it to the exact location you specified in the previous step. If reinstalling Sticky Notes does not resolve the issue, disable the Sticky Notes information feature.

5. Disable Insights Feature in Sticky Notes

With Sticky Notes information, Cortana can access information that you add to the Sticky Notes app. For example, Cortana will convert the number you added in a note into a link you can call from.

Disable this feature to ensure it does not conflict with the application. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. To research Sticky Notes in the Windows search bar and open it.
  2. Click on the Settings (gear icon) in the upper right corner.
  3. Below General settings, turn off the toggle for Activate information.

If disabling information doesn’t work, run the Windows Store Apps Troubleshooter.

6. Run Windows Store Apps Troubleshooter

Windows has a dedicated Windows Store apps troubleshooter to help you identify and fix app-related issues. Therefore, give him a chance to find and fix the problem.

Follow the steps below to run the Windows Store App Troubleshooter:

  1. Right click on Windows Begin button and go to Settings.
  2. Go to Update and security.
  3. Click on the Troubleshoot in the left sidebar.
  4. Click on Additional convenience stores in the right pane.
  5. Click on Windows Store apps and knock Run the troubleshooter.

After that, follow the on-screen instructions and let the troubleshooter fix the problem. If you still can’t fix the problem after running a troubleshooter, you may need to disable Windows Defender Firewall to make sure it’s not blocking application processing.

Write down your notes using sticky notes or try alternatives

Following the fixes above should help resolve the issue. When these solutions don’t work, try updating Windows, switching accounts, and clearing Microsoft store cache as a last resort.

If these fixes fail, you better find Sticky Notes alternatives and use them for all your note-taking needs.
