Newswise – Irvine, California, October 20, 2021 – Over the past half-century, the University of California, Irvine has hosted some of the world’s foremost experts in the environment, energy, oceans, and atmosphere in the Golden State. To share their stories, the UCI is launching a special web-based report today, “California’s Climate Crisis”.

Through its three main sections – The Problem, Human Impacts, and Solutions – the site offers dozens of feature articles, videos, podcast recordings and photographs, with plans for ongoing updates and new stories. The documents describe the UCI researchers’ understanding of the climate issues facing California and the extent to which they are working to counter the dilemma.

“The UCI’s approach to tackling the impacts of global warming and climate change on our country of origin has always been highly multidisciplinary with broad scope,” said UCI Vice-Chancellor for Research Pramod Khargonekar. “This recently released collection of documents shows how nearly every UCI school has people engaged in current climate change issues in California.”

Parts 1 and 2 of the site offer writings, videos and audio recordings covering a wide range of topics and regions, from a coastline threatened by potential sea level rise to alpine forests suffering from drought. Particular attention is paid to text and audio formats to the recent catastrophic oil spill on the Orange County coast. The online resource also discusses the impact of a changing climate on residents of California, including the elderly, minority populations, and those facing economic hardship.

Part 3 – Solutions – reflects the “all terrain” nature of the UCI’s response to the crisis. Features in this section range from using chemical methods to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to promoting changes in laws and regulations to help cool the planet.

The site offers many opportunities for sharing, feedback and learning about the many UCI experts who research California’s climate and environment.

“UCI researchers engaged in climate change research in our home country in a spirit of creative optimism that the problems we face are very serious but not impossible,” said Khargonekar.
