Ruth Kirschner has been a finalist for the Eugene O’Neill National Playwrights Conference, CulturalDC’s Source Festival, and the Humana Short Play Festival. His one-act play Fifteen Notes was produced at the Ensemble Studio Theater, directed by Curt Dempster. Other one-acts were produced at the West Coast Ensemble in Los Angeles; the Actor’s Theater of Santa Rosa; the Cutting Ball Theater in San Francisco; The San Francisco Fringe Festival (2 prizes for best play); SF’s Phoenix Theater; The Marin Fringe Festival (2 prizes for the best piece). Her full play Remember Me was part of Centenary Stage Company’s 2004 Women Playwrights series, and her play Whippoorwill, also in the WPS in 2019, is now produced by Centenary Stage Co., which will open March 31, 2022. Ruth was sponsored by the Marin Shakespeare Company will work weekly from February 2019 through January 2020 with veterans and civilians incarcerated at San Quentin State Prison. It was an improvisation and storytelling workshop. On December 16, 2021, the band performed The Field, Ruth’s full-length play based on their stories.

Ruth Kirschner’s play The Field has been nominated for the 2022 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Wanting to make sure all voices are recognized, the playwright tells us the play is “based on textual stories that have been told by incarcerated veterans currently serving time in San Quentin prison.”

Ruth is a member of the Dramatists Guild, the Writers’ Community (in Squaw Valley) and a long-time participant in Will Dunne’s playwriting workshops. His plays have been developed twice at the Last Frontier Theater Conference, and his solo works in progress have been staged at the Marsh Theater in San Francisco. In August 2020, Ruth wrote and produced Cecelia Delivers, three public service videos still available to watch on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter.

Working for Henson Associates (HA) (The Muppets) as an animator in the formative years of her psyche helped make her a writer! (thanks, Miss Piggy). His early studies with Olga Heifetz (piano) and Elie Siegmeistter (composition) also influenced his writing style. Besides her current work with teenage writers, Ruth has frequently taught creative writing summer workshops for adults at the Putney School in Vermont. Last but not least, Ruth says that studying early childhood development at Bank Street College, founding and running a school for children, having a daughter and being with her, listening to children – these are her best sources of inspiration, discovery and activism.
