After downloading the lottery template above:

1. Set your price: From $1 to $50, the beauty of the Melbourne Cup sweep is that it caters to everyone in the office!

2. Sell the tickets: 24 tickets for 24 horses. Sell them, then it’s time to draw. Don’t forget to get the money back when people buy their tickets.

3. Draw the horses: Collect the tickets, fold them, place them in a hat or a container, then ask everyone to draw their horse. Be sure to note in the left column of the form who drew which horse.

4. Divide the winnings: Make sure you understand in advance what everyone can win, so that no one is confused before the winnings are distributed.

Suggested Winnings Breakdown:

First: 60% of winnings

Second: 25-30% (Depending on last place!)

Third: ten%

Last: Repayment

Is it legal?

Don’t worry – it’s completely legal to perform a desktop sweep, but just check your state’s laws as to the maximum price limit for performing a sweep without a license.

Usually these limits run into the thousands of dollars, so you’d really have to use some sort of swipe ring to get in trouble.

Just make sure that if you organize the sweep, you don’t keep any of the money!

The other kind of Melbourne Cup sweep

You can do a common Melbourne Cup sweep, where you sell 24 tickets and have people pull them out of a hat, or you can auction off the horses.

So favorite, Deauville Legend when we created our printable office sweep template (check out our Guide to the Wide World of Sports Melbourne Cup form, written by Simon O’Donnell here to find out which horses are the most likely winners), could be worth more than Tralee Rose, which pays $126. You can do either, but the mainstay is the normal balayage, so if you’re not confident with what’s called a ‘Calcutta’ balayage, then just go with the standard issue.
