Jean Boyega not just starring and producing the highly anticipated sequel to Attack the blockbut he also actively contributed to the history of Attack Block 2. During an exclusive interview with Collider’s own Christine Radish for the Boyega-headed Breakupthe star revealed new details about the sequel, highlighting how Attack Block 2 is approaching production.

While Boyega had his breakout role playing Finn in the star wars sequel trilogy, the British actor’s debut feature credit comes from 2011 attack the dark. The indie horror flick stars Boyega as Moses, a gang leader who becomes a local hero once he uses his street smarts to fight an alien invasion. In addition to imagining some of the most unique aliens to ever appear in film, attack the dark also uses Moses’ background to explore real-life issues such as gentrification and social inequality, highlighting how an unjust society leads young people to become involved in crime.

A decade later Attack the blocka sequel has been confirmed, with Boyega reprising the role of Moses and the filmmaker Joe Cornish come back as a writer and director. Boyega was also set to produce the sequel, a job that saw him become directly involved in Attack Block 2the story. When asked how he was involved in the certificate, Boyega said:

“This process has been fantastic. The story was actually pitched by myself and Joe Cornish. We collaborated a lot to create a story that makes sense for Moses and the other characters, as well as for the new characters who will also appear in the sequel. And then, too, there are different perspectives in the writing, with Joe having his perspective and me having mine. London has changed so much, in so many different ways, over the years since the first movie. We’re just trying to make sure we explore all of that, while bringing a whole different vibe to this crazy first movie that we did.

With Boyega helping with the story, Attack Block 2 looks even more interesting. While Cornish did a great job with the first film, Boyega’s take on Moses is the emotional heart of Attack the block, so it’s great to see Boyega playing a more pivotal role in the development of the sequel. But when can we watch it? When Attack Block 2 start manufacturing? About this, Boyega told us:

“We are quite close. We are getting there. Obviously, we don’t want to give anyone a date because we want to take care of the creative process. We have the main backbone of the story, but we’re still in the lab, just making sure the story is correct. The story is everything. But it won’t be too long. I gave them the drums to speed up the process. Hopefully soon we’ll have an announcement of when we’ll be in London to ruin it.

Boyega also discussed returning to the role of Moses, discussing how working for the first film influences the sequel. Related to this, Boyega also revealed that the sequel will see an older version of Moses, which means we will learn what happened after the heartbreaking ending in which the young man was arrested by the police, even if he saved everyone. In the words of Boyega:

“You go back and watch the movie again and remember the character. I reverted to my old script. I have my old notes to read. And then, also, on top of that, all the material that Joe collected, over time to create the first movie, in terms of his pitch and everything that was in the bible for Attack the block, we get it out of the dusty corners, we blow the dust off, and we get back to work. Now it’s all about aging the character slightly and seeing where he is now.

Boyega’s next big role is in The female king which hits theaters on September 16. Discover The female kingbelow and look for Christina’s full interview with Boyega soon.
