Calligraphy and writing instruments are still alive and well in the digital age – and Montblanc’s slew of new stores proves it. The luxury brand opened several new boutiques in places including New York, Shanghai and Hong Kong, when brands were closing stores rather than opening them.
Last month, the German company opened one of its most unique spaces to date: Montblanc Haus, located right next to its headquarters and writing instrument manufacturing facility in Hamburg. It is designed by Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos and inspired by the heritage of Montblanc. The building – in black and white on the mark – has 3,875 square feet of space on three floors dedicated to the art of Montblanc writing.

Naturally, the brand’s expertise in crafting top-quality pens – a heritage dating back to 1906 – takes center stage: exhibits chronicle its journey as well as its high-end writing instruments, including its parts. High Artistry and its limited editions. These include a new collection created for the launch of Montblanc Haus. High Artistry’s “The First Ascent of Mont Blanc” limited editions (see box) were inspired by the first successful summit of Europe’s highest mountain by hunter Jacques Blamart and physician Michel-Gabriel Paccard in 1786.
Through various works and immersive digital experiences, the art of writing is also explored. An autograph library includes 30 original handwritten notes from figures such as Ernest Hemingway, Albert Einstein, Frida Kahlo and Spike Lee. In the in-Haus writing workshop, you can improve your own calligraphy after making up your own mind about their work.
