An EcommerceBytes reader has alerted us to an issue that has online sellers wondering if PayPal experienced a security issue over the weekend. Inside their account pages when logged into PayPal, there is a link that leads to a website claiming to be PayPal’s in China.

The reader explained, “PayPal transaction detail pages currently display a link called ‘Get more details in your China PayPal account’, the link URL starts with ‘paypa.cn’ (not paypal.cn). This seems to happen to many but not all PayPal accounts. Some users suspect that PayPal has been hacked.”

The seller said they called PayPal support on Sunday and said a representative confirmed there had been multiple reports of this issue over the past two days. The seller went on to write, “The reason why they didn’t remove this link from every ‘transaction details’ page template doesn’t make sense even though the fake paypa.cn website has been removed. “

Sellers also discussed the issue on the eBay Discussion Forums where a seller reported: “The link tried to open a separate “.cn” webpage, then my Windows 10 laptop froze, I had to turn it off using the power button.”

There doesn’t appear to be an official response from PayPal about this mysterious link that has users worried in these two threads – we reached out to PayPal on Monday morning to ask for more information.

In the meantime, document what you see and be extra careful.
