Within companies that practice Scrum and Agile methodologies, the Scrum master has a vital job, ensuring that the team follows the process and builds the best possible products. A good Scrum master is part coach, part product manager, part cheerleader, part developer. This can make writing an effective Scrum master a tricky proposition.

The ideal Scrum Master CV will show the candidate’s absolute mastery of Scrum tactics. It will also showcase their teamwork and management skills, as well as their ability to juggle the elements of complex projects. We spoke with several experts who hire Scrum Masters to find out exactly what they are looking for in such a resume.

Scrum Master: Critical skills to master

A good Scrum master understands that the heart of his job is leadership. Encouraging others to follow best practices for Agile and Scrum tactics to achieve goals is essential and not always easy. “A necessary skill for Scrum masters is the ability to set up an appropriate organizational system. Scrum teams need structure and planning to keep things organized, so Scrum Masters need to have a strategy in place to keep everyone on track while ensuring that no task is overlooked.

Radka notes that many teams use platforms to keep dispersed teams on track, so mastering the most widely used platforms (like Jira) is a good first step. You can also check a company’s job posting to see if they’re using a platform you’re unfamiliar with so you can test it out before an interview.

Therese Salazarinternational tech recruiter at Parabol, adds, “They must be prepared to remove any barriers or obstacles that stand in the way of success so that their team is free to focus on what really matters.”

Leadership is a soft skill

Salazar reminds us that leadership is often a series of soft skills:

“Soft skills such as empathy, active listening and good communication skills are essential. A good Scrum master must go beyond knowing all the basic agile ceremonies. He needs to become a facilitator to make sure the conversation happens during daily meetings, sprint planning sessions, and retrospectives. They should make meetings engaging and give each team member a space to voice their ideas. He must adapt to the needs of the team and teach it to organize itself.

“Empathy is arguably the most overlooked skill in the tech world, and it’s especially important for Scrum Masters. Without empathy, Scrum Masters won’t have the interpersonal skills needed to understand team members. After all, the job of the Scrum master is to pave the way for the development team to achieve its goals, and the first step to doing so is to understand the team.

In light of this, when writing your Scrum master CV, be sure to highlight your “soft skills” (such as empathy and communication) just as much as your Scrum-related and technical skills. Radka adds: “Excellent pedagogical skills are required, especially for teams new to the Scrum approach. Not only must a great Scrum master know what to do, he or she must also be able to communicate how and why to everyone involved. So be sure to mention communication as part of your soft skill set.

Scrum Masters Have Difficult Skills Too

“The perfect Scrum master must have worked as software engineer in the past,” Salazar tells us. “It is also useful if they have experience in the sector [the job is in], because the challenges a developer faces in, say, a fintech start-up tend to be very different from those faced by a developer working in an established technical infrastructure company. Previous experience as a project manager is not necessary, although some Scrum Masters find it helpful to have worked in a leadership position at a company that uses a waterfall methodology. After all, there’s no better way to know what pitfalls to avoid.

Scrum Master Certifications: Is It Worth Listing on a Resume?

Certifications are a hot topic in technology. There are a lot of things available to technologists, but the jury is out on the value they bring to job seekers. You can pay thousands of dollars for some tech certifications, so it’s essential that this investment pays dividends in your job search. For Scrum masters and Agile practitioners, there’s a constant debate about whether to earn them and whether they’re helpful in landing a job.

“The Certified Scrum Master designation shows employees that you have the experience and skills to successfully lead an agile team,” says Walker. Some jobs with a strong Scrum component will outright require candidates to have particular certifications; others will treat all certifications as a “good to have”.

Radka says certifications from popular sources like and Scrum Alliance are good to see on a resume, but stops short of saying they’re necessary. Meanwhile, Salazar tells Dice, “If a potential Scrum Master doesn’t have the right certifications, they better be prepared to demonstrate that they have what it takes to be a successful Scrum Master. Overall, I’d rather hire an experienced Scrum master with excellent people skills than one who has no experience but has official certification. In other words, whether or not you have certifications, make sure your resume effectively shows your mastery of Scrum concepts – that way your resume will make it past the initial hiring screen and into someone’s hands. one who will be able to make the decision to bring you on board.
