Thiago Silva was recently hailed by Jamie Carragher after Chelsea’s Carabao Cup final as “truly world class” and it’s not hard to see why.
While Virgil van Dijk received most of the praise this afternoon, Carragher was keen to reserve a special mention for the Brazilian, whose outstanding form for the Blues has been significant in a season where Thomas’ side Tuchel looks comfortable in third place and still has two more trophies to fight for.
Given that he is now 37, that makes his effortless defensive work all the more impressive and although Chelsea have tended to favor a younger player profile, Silva should serve as an example to those lurking in behind the scenes at the club, why the occasional pinch of experience is no harm.
His interview late last year about how he continued to improve as he got older was relevant at a time when Robert Lewandowski was plundering a first-half hat-trick for Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
The 33-year-old, who was linked with a move to Stamford Bridge in the January transfer window, netted his hat-trick in the opening 23 minutes as Bayern cruised past RB Salzburg in the quarter-finals.
Lewandowski cemented his status as Europe’s top marksman as Julian Nagelsmann’s side won 7-1 (8-2 on aggregate) and his latest goalscoring exploits could let the Blues ruin their decision not to explore the possibility of an agreement. Romelu Lukaku’s presence at Chelsea complicates any move for a striker of Lewandowski’s caliber, but the opportunity was rumored to be there for the club in January.
Chelsea transfer chief Marina Granovskaia, whose future at the club is now in doubt amid Roman Abramovich’s decision to sell, has reportedly been offered the chance to sign the veteran striker in the winter transfer window , according to football consultant Ian McGarry.
The report claims that Lewandowski’s agent Pini Zahavi was keen to use his close contacts alongside Thomas Tuchel to see if a deal would be viable.
McGarry added that Timo Werner could have gone the other way.
He told the Transfer Window Podcast“Pini Zahavi, often described as the original super-agent, represents Lewandowski and has done so for over two years.
“Zahavi is also a close confidant of Granovskaia and it is certainly the case that he offered Lewandowski to Chelsea and Granovskaia.
“It’s a move that could include Werner at Bayern.”
A deal, obviously, hasn’t materialized and Lewandowski, who sees his current contract with the Bundesliga champions expire in the summer of 2023, has scored 12 goals in 10 appearances since the start of the new year.

Werner, on the other hand, is yet to score against any Premier League opposition this year at a time when Tuchel struggles to try and find the perfect attacking formula for his side.
Silva interview with Globo Sports suggests Lewandowski should still be among the Blues’ new owner’s priorities this summer when it comes to leading the next phase of Tuchel’s strike force.
The 37-year-old Brazil international, who fans voted to succeed Cesar Apzilicueta as Chelsea captain, has explained how his age has improved his game.
“Of course, today I don’t have the same explosion as at Fluminense, but there are things that I didn’t have at the start and today I have a lot of them, that’s the experience,” he said.
“You cut a lot of paths, you can read a lot of things before they happen. At the time, I was running, but I wasn’t thinking.
“Today I run less and I think more, you know? I’m 37, I play in one of the best leagues in the world, in one of the biggest clubs, at a high level.”
